Pokiri didn’t make Mahesh Babu famous. It changed the size of his stardom

Mahesh Babu already had hits. Pokiri turned his cool restraint into a new mass-hero template, broke Telugu box-office records and created expectations he later said left him unsure what to do next.

Pokiri did not introduce Mahesh Babu to Telugu audiences. By 2006, he had already delivered Okkadu and Athadu and was firmly established as a leading man.

What Pokiri changed was the size and shape of the stardom.

Puri Jagannadh’s crime film took the polished, restrained screen image associated with Mahesh and put it inside a much rougher commercial machine. Pandu looked casual, spoke with contempt, moved through a criminal world without the ornamental heroism common to many mass films of the period, and then revealed that the entire identity had been a police operation.

The twist mattered. The attitude mattered more.

In a contemporary IANS interview from July 2006, Mahesh called Pokiri the biggest hit of his career and credited Puri Jagannadh for the script and narration. He said the film had reached “all sections” of the audience and expected its collections to cross ₹40 crore.

Two decades later, Mahesh described the effect more starkly: Pokiri made him a star, and the scale of that success left him unsure what to do next.

That gap between the immediate celebration and the later admission is the story.

The box-office record came with a new image

Retrospective reporting from The Indian Express describes Pokiri as the highest-grossing Telugu film of its time. Chitram’s Genesis Data links the film to Mahesh Babu and director Puri Jagannadh but does not currently contain a structured Pokiri box-office claim.

That distinction matters.

The historical record can be reported with attribution, but a canonical Chitram gross should not be built from a retrospective sentence without separately researching the underlying box-office evidence.

What is better established is the direction of change.

Indian Express retrospectives repeatedly describe Pokiri as the film that propelled Mahesh into a different level of stardom. Before it, his appeal included the “Prince” persona: youthful, urbane, restrained. Pokiri proved that he could carry a harder mass-action film without discarding that coolness.

The commercial hero did not become louder. He became more dangerous.

Puri Jagannadh’s template travelled

Pokiri’s afterlife makes the film unusually useful to revisit.

The story was remade in Tamil as Pokkiri with Vijay, in Hindi as Wanted with Salman Khan and in Kannada as Porki with Darshan. The Indian Express’s 20-year retrospective argues that the remakes demonstrated the portability of Puri’s commercial structure across industries and different star personas.

The Hindi remake is especially important to the broader Indian-cinema story. Wanted became a major success for Salman Khan after a difficult run and helped re-establish his action-star phase.

Chitram should not claim that Pokiri single-handedly “created” that later phase. A remake passes through a different director, star, market and moment.

But it is fair to say that a Telugu commercial screenplay became valuable intellectual material across multiple industries.

Success created a problem, not just a solution

The most interesting piece of later evidence comes from Mahesh himself.

In 2026, while discussing a much larger new project, he compared the emotional pressure to what he had felt after Pokiri. He said he had become confused about what to do next because audience expectations suddenly changed.

That is useful because it prevents the article from becoming a standard “film made star bigger” biography.

A breakout hit can narrow a career as much as it expands one. Once an audience associates a star with a new peak, every subsequent project is measured against it.

The films after Pokiri did not immediately reproduce the same effect. The next major reset took time.

The database row and the cultural memory say different things

Genesis can preserve the clean facts: Mahesh Babu, Puri Jagannadh, the 2006 film, the surrounding filmographies.

The editorial layer explains why Pokiri remains a reference point even after Telugu cinema’s box-office scale grew many times larger.

Its record was eventually surpassed. The star image it created lasted much longer.

Twenty years later, Mahesh could still reach for Pokiri when he needed to describe what sudden scale felt like.

That is a stronger legacy than any single number.

The record also changed the value of Telugu source material

Pokiri’s remakes matter because they show a second kind of commercial success beyond the original theatrical run.

A successful regional film can end when its local run ends. Pokiri instead became a repeatable commercial property. Tamil, Hindi and Kannada stars could be inserted into the core structure and the story still retained value.

That does not make the original film responsible for every later success. It does show that Telugu commercial writing had become exportable intellectual property before “pan-India” became the industry’s standard marketing language.

For Chitram, that makes Pokiri useful as both a movie record and a market-history marker.
