Arjun Reddy was a gamble before it became a controversy machine

Before Arjun Reddy became a remake, a controversy, a reference point and a permanent argument, it was a difficult first film that Sandeep Reddy Vanga struggled to get financed.

That origin is easy to lose because the movie's afterlife became so loud.

Chitram's Genesis Data gives the clean foundation: Arjun Reddy is a 2017 film with Vijay Deverakonda as an acting credit and Sandeep Reddy Vanga as director. Contemporary and later interviews fill in the story around those two names.

Four years of looking for a way in

In an August 2017 interview with Scroll, Vanga said he had struggled for about four years to find producers and had spent roughly two years writing Arjun Reddy. He described being told to forget the story and said that after rejections from producers and actors, he was directed toward Vijay Deverakonda.

At the time of Vanga's narration to him, Deverakonda was shooting Pelli Choopulu. That film would itself become an important step in the actor's rise, but Vanga was betting on the performer before Arjun Reddy had any proof of its own.

The Scroll interview was published just after Arjun Reddy's release, which makes it valuable: it captures the director before the film's later mythology had fully formed.

Vanga said people were already calling the film a blockbuster and framed its commercial success as the thing that could finally let him make another movie without the same financial anxiety.

The retrospective version is even starker

Nine years later, Deverakonda gave his own account.

In August 2026, Indian Express reported his remarks that he and Vanga had no money, influence or industry pull when they made the film. He said the Vanga family put its savings behind the project. The same retrospective reported a budget of about ₹5 crore and a worldwide gross of ₹51 crore.

Those financial figures are secondary reporting, not Genesis box-office claims, and they appear here with that attribution.

More important than the exact multiplier is the career outcome. Arjun Reddy became the film most closely associated with Deverakonda's early stardom and established Vanga as a director with a highly identifiable voice.

It also travelled.

From Telugu hit to remake engine

The film was remade in Hindi as Kabir Singh, again directed by Vanga. The remake carried the same director and core premise into the Hindi market.

That expansion also amplified the argument around the original film.

Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh drew sustained criticism over the way their male protagonist behaves toward women and the way the story frames his relationship. This is an area where an editorial piece has to be precise: “misogynistic” is a criticism made about the film, not a neutral database field that Chitram should state as settled fact.

In a 2022 Indian Express report on Deverakonda's comments, the actor rejected the label that the film itself was misogynistic or anti-feminist. At the same time, he acknowledged that viewers who had experienced abusive relationships could find the material painful and said he respected their objection.

That response matters because it prevents the article from reducing the controversy to one side's summary.

The argument became part of the film's legacy

There are successful films that gradually lose their edges as nostalgia takes over. Arjun Reddy has not behaved that way.

Its commercial influence and its criticism stayed entangled. The same qualities that supporters described as raw, emotionally direct or formally bold were linked by critics to a protagonist whose violence and entitlement were not sufficiently challenged by the film.

Chitram does not need to adjudicate that debate to document it responsibly.

The facts that can be supported are strong enough: Vanga struggled to get the project made; Deverakonda was still early in his rise when Vanga approached him; the film became a major hit; it generated remakes; and it produced a long-running public argument about the behavior it depicts and how that behavior is framed.

Two careers, one irreversible break

This is why Arjun Reddy is more than a “controversial film” story.

For Deverakonda, it followed Pelli Choopulu and pushed him into a new level of recognition. For Vanga, it was the directorial debut that created the path to Kabir Singh and later large-scale Hindi projects. Their 2026 retrospective comments show that both men still describe the production as a formative shared gamble.

That origin is worth preserving without turning it into a hero myth — and so is the criticism, without converting interpretation into objective fact.
