Keerthy Suresh was not the obvious Savitri. That is what makes Mahanati’s casting story matter

The safest way to cast a beloved screen legend is to choose the person everybody already expects.

Mahanati did the opposite.

When Nag Ashwin later discussed the making of his Savitri biopic, he said Keerthy Suresh had not initially been the obvious name around the project. In a 2019 Indian Express interview, he described her as an unconventional choice and spoke about his fear of whether the film would feel authentic to people who already knew Savitri's life and work.

That casting decision eventually ended with Keerthy Suresh winning India's National Film Award for Best Actress.

The distance between those two facts is what makes Mahanati a useful career story.

Those are not fan-voted popularity markers or promotional claims. They are official awards outcomes, which makes them unusually clean historical anchors for a career profile.
