Keerthy Suresh was not the obvious Savitri. That is what makes Mahanati’s casting story matter
Nag Ashwin later said Keerthy Suresh was not initially on anyone’s list for Savitri. The unconventional choice ended with the National Film Award for Best Actress.

The safest way to cast a beloved screen legend is to choose the person everybody already expects.
Mahanati did the opposite.
When Nag Ashwin later discussed the making of his Savitri biopic, he said Keerthy Suresh had not initially been the obvious name around the project. In a 2019 Indian Express interview, he described her as an unconventional choice and spoke about his fear of whether the film would feel authentic to people who already knew Savitri's life and work.
That casting decision eventually ended with Keerthy Suresh winning India's National Film Award for Best Actress.
The distance between those two facts is what makes Mahanati a useful career story.
A difficult subject for a director's second feature
Chitram's Genesis Data records Mahanati as a 2018 film directed by Nag Ashwin, with acting credits for Keerthy Suresh, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Vijay Deverakonda and Naga Chaitanya among the selected Genesis people.
For Ashwin, the scale of the choice was striking. Indian Express's 2018 interview described Mahanati as only his second directorial outing after Yevade Subramanyam. He was taking on the life of Savitri, an actor whose image already belonged to public memory across Telugu and Tamil cinema.
Biopics face a problem ordinary fiction does not: audiences bring their own archive into the theatre. A costume, gesture, relationship or chronology can feel wrong even when the movie works dramatically.
Ashwin's later explanation makes clear that authenticity was not an abstract concern. He said he worried about whether people who knew Savitri would believe the film.
Keerthy was the bet
The post-awards interview makes the casting story more interesting because it was told after the result was known.
Ashwin said Keerthy was on nobody's list at first. The production considered different possibilities, including more senior performers and newcomers. His eventual choice was described less as a spreadsheet decision than an instinct.
That can sound like mythology after a success, so the important thing is not to romanticize it. The source supports the fact that Keerthy was not initially the obvious consensus choice and that Ashwin ultimately felt she was right for the role. It does not prove there was one dramatic moment when everyone else rejected her.
What happened on screen is easier to measure through the public record.
The awards turned the performance into a fixed milestone
The Government of India's Press Information Bureau announcement for the 66th National Film Awards named Keerthy Suresh Best Actress for Mahanati. The official citation recognized her performance across a wide emotional and temporal span.
The same awards announcement named Mahanati Best Telugu Film. Indian Express's 2019 interview noted that the film received three National Film Awards, including Best Actress, Best Telugu Film and Best Costume Design.
Those are not fan-voted popularity markers or promotional claims. They are official awards outcomes, which makes them unusually clean historical anchors for a career profile.
For Chitram, this is exactly the kind of moment where structured data and editorial storytelling should meet. The people and movie already exist as Genesis entities. The article can explain the creative risk; the database can preserve the credits and, in a later enrichment pass, formal award relationships.
An ensemble built around a remembered life
Mahanati was not constructed as a one-person showcase in the database sense. Genesis also links Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Vijay Deverakonda and Naga Chaitanya to the film, while Nag Ashwin is linked as director.
That matters because the movie's storytelling uses a contemporary frame around Savitri's life rather than presenting only a linear recreation. Ashwin's 2019 interview specifically discussed why the Samantha and Vijay characters mattered to the film's construction.
The Genesis package should not infer character details that it has not modeled, but the credit network itself already shows how many recognizable careers intersect at this title.
A career turn that can be stated without hype
It is easy to overstate career turning points. “This film changed everything” is often impossible to prove.
Mahanati gives Chitram a more defensible formulation.
Keerthy Suresh took on a role that the director himself described as an unconventional casting choice. The film was officially recognized as Best Telugu Film at the National Film Awards. Keerthy won Best Actress for the performance.
That is enough.
The story does not need invented behind-the-scenes conflict or exaggerated claims that nobody believed in her. The documented tension is stronger: a young director making his second feature chose an actor who was not the obvious consensus candidate to embody one of South Indian cinema's most remembered stars, worried about authenticity, and came out the other side with the country's top film acting award.
That is a clean kind of drama — one created by the record itself.
