They kept calling Pelli Choopulu a ‘small film.’ Then it rewrote Tharun Bhascker’s life

Tharun Bhascker said the industry’s treatment of his sub-₹1 crore debut nearly destroyed his confidence. The film ran 50 days, travelled in the US and turned the insult ‘small film’ into a commercial argument.

Before Pelli Choopulu became the film people cited as proof that small Telugu movies could travel, Tharun Bhascker was carrying it around on a hard drive asking people what to do with it.

That image is more useful than the later success mythology.

The 2016 romantic comedy was made for roughly ₹1 crore, used a largely young cast and introduced Bhascker as a feature-film director. The Indian Express reported that the film completed 50 days in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and the United States — and that its profits from the US market alone were equivalent to roughly six times the production cost.

Chitram’s Genesis Data links the movie to Bhascker as director and Vijay Deverakonda as an actor.

The database records two careers.

The story explains how unlikely the launch felt from inside the production.

“Small film” was not being used as a compliment

In a post-release account carried by The Indian Express, Bhascker described the discouragement surrounding the project before it found an audience.

He said people in the industry treated the sub-₹1 crore scale as evidence that the film did not deserve priority. He recalled taking the finished movie around on a hard drive, searching for advice and support, while hearing low estimates for what it might ever earn.

The publication said he had reached the edge of losing confidence.

Those claims come from Bhascker’s own account and should stay attributed that way. Chitram does not need to invent a list of unnamed executives who rejected him or turn ordinary financing skepticism into a conspiracy against new filmmakers.

The sourced story is already strong enough: a debut director believed the scale of his movie caused people around him to take it less seriously.

The economics flipped the insult

The film then became a sleeper hit.

The Indian Express reported a roughly ₹1 crore production cost and said the US profits alone amounted to about six times that cost. Years later, Bhascker told Film Companion that Pelli Choopulu had grossed around ₹40 crore, using the figure while explaining how carefully he later thought about budgets and recovery.

Those are two different types of retrospective financial evidence.

Neither exists as a Genesis box-office claim, so Chitram should not quietly convert either into a canonical total. The ₹1 crore production cost and the US-profit comparison come from contemporary reporting; the approximately ₹40 crore gross is Bhascker’s later recollection.

They can coexist if labeled correctly.

The film also changed what “debut director” meant for Bhascker

Success created a new problem.

In 2023, Bhascker told Film Companion that Pelli Choopulu’s scale of success produced anxiety because expectations for his next film rose instantly. He described becoming boxed in by the identity of the filmmaker who had made that particular kind of family-friendly romantic comedy.

That later reflection makes the debut more interesting.

The industry first made him feel that the film was too small to matter. After it worked, the same film became large enough to create its own creative trap.

National recognition made the record durable

Pelli Choopulu later won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu at the 64th National Film Awards. Bhascker also received national recognition for the film’s dialogue writing.

The Best Telugu Film result is preserved in official Government of India / PIB material, including the PIB’s verified awards coverage.

The awards did not make the film a sleeper hit; they came after the theatrical run.

But they fixed the movie into the official record in a way that box-office anecdotes alone cannot.

The legacy is bigger than one breakout actor

Because Vijay Deverakonda later became a major star, Pelli Choopulu is often folded into his origin story. That is valid, but it can obscure the filmmaking story.

Bhascker was not simply the director who happened to cast a future star.

He had made a low-cost feature with limited leverage, struggled to get the industry to take it seriously, and then watched it generate enough audience response to alter expectations around his next film.

For Chitram, the most useful angle is therefore not “the movie that launched Vijay Deverakonda.”

It is the movie that turned “small film” from a dismissal into a business argument.

Pelli Choopulu showed that a debut director, a modest budget and unfamiliar faces did not automatically impose a small commercial ceiling — and then forced its director to live with the pressure created by proving exactly that.
