RRR had two launches: the box office and the West
RRR opened at blockbuster scale in India, then found an unexpectedly large second audience through international word of mouth, streaming and an awards run that ended with an Oscar for Naatu Naatu.

RRR had an enormous first life before its second one began.
Chitram's Genesis Data preserves a Sacnilk trade claim of ₹223 crore worldwide gross on opening day. Indian Express later reported that the film crossed a ₹1,000 crore global box-office milestone. By ordinary blockbuster standards, that would have been enough to define the story.
Instead, RRR kept moving.
The film's unexpected Western word of mouth, streaming reach, awards campaign and the global life of “Naatu Naatu” turned a Telugu theatrical event into something different: a movie whose international cultural footprint grew after the opening weekend was already history.
The box-office launch
Genesis links RRR to Jr NTR and Ram Charan as actors and S. S. Rajamouli as director. Its captured opening-day claim comes from Sacnilk, which reported ₹223 crore worldwide gross.
That number should remain a trade-published claim, not a universal truth. Sacnilk's own methodology notes that its box-office data is compiled from multiple sources and research and may be approximate.
Still, the figure captures the scale at which RRR entered the market.
Indian Express's January 2023 retrospective said Rajamouli had already appeared at an April 2022 press event celebrating a ₹1,000 crore global box-office milestone. Yet the same retrospective makes clear that the director was surprised by what happened next.
The audience Rajamouli did not expect
Indian Express reported Rajamouli saying that the volume and speed of Western attention was different from what he had seen with Baahubali 2. In a separate September 2022 report tied to a Toronto appearance, he described the Western response as an unexpected word-of-mouth success.
That surprise is important.
RRR was not designed as a Hollywood film wearing Indian clothes. Rajamouli repeatedly framed the international response as something he discovered after release rather than a reason to sand down the storytelling style that made the film itself.
The movie's theatrical success had created awareness. Streaming then made access much easier.
Streaming gave the second life scale
In its January 2023 feature, Indian Express quoted Netflix India executive Monika Shergill saying RRR had been viewed for more than 73 million hours globally within its first four weeks on Netflix and had trended in 62 countries across America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
Those are platform-provided figures relayed through a publication, so they should be attributed that way. They are still unusually useful because they show that the international conversation was not confined to festival rooms or critic circles.
People were finding the movie at scale.
The online reaction then fed screenings, press coverage and an awards campaign. RRR did not receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture or International Feature Film. The historic Academy result came through its music.
Naatu Naatu became the cleanest official marker
The Golden Globes' official database records RRR with two nominations and one win: Best Original Song — Motion Picture for “Naatu Naatu.”
The Academy's official 2023 ceremony record lists “Naatu Naatu” as the winner for Music (Original Song), with music by M. M. Keeravaani and lyrics by Chandrabose.
That precision matters because “RRR won an Oscar” is true in ordinary conversation but incomplete in a historical database. The Oscar was awarded to the song's creators in the Original Song category; it was not an Academy Award for the film as Best Picture.
Chitram should make that distinction easy rather than pedantic.
A Telugu film became a global reference point
The RRR story is not simply “Indian film wins Western award.” That framing makes the West the judge and the award the conclusion.
A better timeline is more interesting.
First, a Telugu-language Rajamouli spectacle opened at blockbuster scale. Then Western viewers encountered it through theatrical word of mouth and streaming in unexpectedly large numbers. Major press and film communities picked it up. The song became an awards contender. The Golden Globe win arrived. The Oscar followed.
The global recognition was downstream of an audience event, not a substitute for one.
That is why RRR rewards being read alongside the record itself: the movie entry, the Rajamouli–Ram Charan–Jr NTR credit network, the opening-day box-office claim, and external official award records all describe different phases of the same phenomenon.
Years later, a single lifetime-gross figure will not explain why RRR mattered. The more durable story is that a Telugu blockbuster found a second audience far outside the market that made it a blockbuster in the first place — and that second audience helped carry one of its songs all the way to the Academy Awards stage.
