Mrunal Thakur thought Sita Ramam would be her first and last Telugu film

During the making of Sita Ramam, Mrunal Thakur reached a point where she thought her first Telugu film might also be her last.

The obstacle was not the role. It was the language.

In a 2024 interview reported by Hindustan Times, Thakur said that working in Telugu initially made her feel constrained because she did not know the language well. She described struggling with lip-sync and told co-star Dulquer Salmaan during the shoot that she did not want to make another Telugu film.

The film that made her want to leave the language instead became the one that gave her a repeat audience in it.

That reversal is the story.

A debut with more friction than the finished film suggests

Chitram’s Genesis Data records Sita Ramam as a 2022 film directed by Hanu Raghavapudi, with Mrunal Thakur and Rashmika Mandanna among the selected Genesis acting credits.

Thakur was not arriving as an unknown performer. She had already worked in Marathi and Hindi projects. But Sita Ramam was her Telugu debut, which meant the performance required her to solve a basic technical problem at the same time she was trying to build a character: how to sound and move naturally in a language she did not command.

Hindustan Times reported her saying that she would work through the dialogue carefully to understand its nuances, but that matching the spoken Telugu on camera was difficult enough to make her consider giving up.

That makes the later audience response more meaningful than a generic “successful debut” label.

The audience started repeating the movie

A year after the release, The Indian Express reported Thakur reflecting on a kind of success she felt she had not previously experienced: repeat viewing.

She said earlier projects had reached major commercial or visibility milestones, but Sita Ramam brought people back to watch her again. She also described Telugu audiences as accepting her as one of their own.

The phrasing matters because it came from Thakur describing the effect on her, not from Chitram declaring cultural ownership on behalf of an audience.

Genesis adds one financial anchor. It preserves a Sacnilk trade claim of ₹94.28 crore worldwide gross for Sita Ramam’s theatrical run. That figure should remain labeled as Sacnilk’s published estimate, with the methodology caveat Genesis already carries.

It is enough to establish that the film was not simply an admired performance with no commercial footprint.

The film opened a route instead of closing one

The best evidence that Sita Ramam was not Thakur’s final Telugu film is already inside Genesis.

Her filmography continues to Hi Nanna in 2023, where Genesis links her with Nani. Hindustan Times reported in late 2022 that the response to Sita Ramam had given her confidence to explore more work in South Indian industries. By 2024, her own retrospective turned the original “first and last” feeling into part of the contrast.

That is a stronger career-turning-point argument than saying Sita Ramam “made her a star.” Thakur already had a career. What changed was the geography of it.

A language she initially experienced as a professional handicap became a market in which audiences were asking to see her again.

The movie itself was designed to travel

The expansion was not only accidental.

When the Hindi version later moved to Disney+ Hotstar, The Indian Express carried comments from Hanu Raghavapudi saying the romance had been conceived to cross language barriers. The film had already opened theatrically in August 2022 and was available in multiple South Indian languages before the later Hindi streaming release.

Chitram does not need to turn that promotional statement into proof that every production decision was “pan-India.” It is enough to note that the director publicly described a cross-language ambition and that the film subsequently created a new Telugu audience for its debuting female lead.

A career story with a measurable before and after

There is a temptation in entertainment writing to treat every successful movie as transformative. Sita Ramam has a more concrete before-and-after.

Before release, Thakur was fighting the language badly enough that she considered not working in Telugu again.

After release, she described repeat viewers, acceptance from Telugu audiences and a new willingness to keep working across languages. Her Genesis filmography then shows the follow-through rather than leaving the claim as interview rhetoric.

The ₹94.28 crore Sacnilk theatrical-run claim is useful context, but it is not the heart of the story.

The heart is that Sita Ramam converted a barrier into a market. For Chitram, that makes the film valuable on both sides of the product: the structured record shows the credits and the subsequent Telugu work; the editorial layer explains why those rows represent a genuine career turn.
