Dasara tested a new ceiling for Nani — and the box office moved it

Nani paired the biggest production of his career to that point with a first-time director. Dasara crossed a producer-announced ₹100 crore milestone and Genesis records ₹118.50 crore worldwide gross from Sacnilk for the theatrical run.

Editor’s note, 18 September 2026: Chitram is resurfacing this story because Nani reunites with Dasara director Srikanth Odela for The Paradise, scheduled to release on 24 September 2026. Everything below describes Dasara’s 2023 run and is not a forecast for the new film.

For most of Nani’s career, scale was not the first thing people talked about.

He had built his reputation through films that leaned on writing, character and performance, often working with filmmakers before they had accumulated the kind of résumé that normally reassures a star. Dasara changed the size of that bet.

The 2023 film was Nani’s biggest production to that point, his first release mounted across five Indian languages at once, and the feature debut of director Srikanth Odela. A week after release, The Indian Express reported that the producers had announced a ₹100 crore worldwide gross. Chitram’s Genesis Data preserves a separate Sacnilk trade claim of ₹118.50 crore worldwide gross for the full theatrical run.

Those figures should not be blended into one “official” number. The more interesting point is what the movie represented before either total existed.

Nani chose his biggest film with a first-time director

Ahead of release, Cinema Express asked Nani about working with Odela on a film larger than the projects usually associated with him.

Nani’s explanation was consistent with a pattern in his career: somebody had once given him a platform, and he felt he should remain open to new filmmakers who arrived with strong material. He described Odela’s execution within the available budget as one of the reasons he trusted the project.

That is not the standard logic of risk reduction.

A star taking his biggest film to that point would normally be expected to reduce uncertainty elsewhere — an established director, a proven franchise, or a familiar commercial package. Dasara paired the increased scale with a debut filmmaker and a coal-belt setting in Telangana that was intentionally rougher and less polished than Nani’s usual screen image.

The first week changed the commercial baseline

The Indian Express reported on April 6, 2023 that Dasara had crossed the ₹100 crore worldwide mark according to producer SLV Cinemas and described it as Nani’s highest-grossing film as a leading man at that point.

Genesis records a different kind of number: Sacnilk’s ₹118.50 crore worldwide gross for the theatrical run.

Those are not contradictory simply because they are different. One is a producer-announced milestone at a particular point in the run; the other is a later trade-published total. Chitram should preserve the period and source rather than flatten them.

The movie’s commercial meaning also appeared in the way Nani discussed it after the opening weekend. In a Cinema Express interview, he called Dasara his biggest film so far but resisted treating a five-language release as automatic proof of “pan-India” success. His emphasis was on whether audiences actually accepted the film outside its original market.

That distinction is useful because the film had been marketed nationally, but Nani was still separating distribution ambition from earned audience reach.

This was not a franchise carrying him

Dasara did not arrive with a sequel number, an established cinematic universe or a director whose name alone could sell the new scale.

Its recognizable assets were Nani, Keerthy Suresh and the promise of a different kind of Nani film.

Genesis links Nani and Keerthy Suresh directly to the movie. That makes the catalog side straightforward, even though Genesis does not yet carry an entry for Odela.

The reporting adds what the database does not say by itself: this was a deliberate attempt to see whether Nani’s audience would follow him into a much bigger, rougher commercial film.

The risk was bigger than the budget

Contemporary coverage described Dasara as Nani’s largest production and noted that he had not had a comparably clear theatrical hit since Jersey in 2019.

That context matters more than declaring the movie a permanent reinvention. Nani did not abandon smaller films after Dasara, and Chitram should not turn one success into a simplistic “before and after” mythology.

The defensible claim is narrower.

Dasara demonstrated that Nani could carry a production and release strategy larger than the mid-scale space most strongly associated with him. It also delivered a career-high gross at the time and did so with a debut director.

That is why the Genesis ₹118.50 crore trade claim belongs here without becoming the whole story.

The number shows the scale of the result.

The story is that Nani chose to test a new ceiling with a first-time filmmaker — and the market moved that ceiling upward.
